Time is brain – the urgent need for value-based care in neurology
The burden of neurological conditions is huge, costing the European society yearly 800b€, more than diabetes, kidney disease, heart disease, and oncology combined (similar numbers in the USA). In addition, up to 70% of patients don’t respond to neurological treatments. Hence, there is a huge need for precision medicine and value-based care in neurology.
In this context, objective biomarkers and clinical-decision making are key. However, clinical assessment and imaging reports are subjective and qualitative. About 24% of reports contain discrepancies. In clinical measures, the error rate of evaluating disability is about 30% and 50% of information is not reported.
The FDA-cleared and CE-marked icometrix AI-driven brain MRI and CT measures and clinical measures app (cognition, fatigue, etc) allows for a data-driven clinical decision-making. These measures are currently used by over 500 hospitals. In addition, as societal costs are so high, first value-based arrangement pilots have been started in the field of MS.
